MANILA, September 22 2016 — Following the success of last year’s Synergy conference, STRIDE and the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) held Synergy 2016 with the theme “Valuing Creativity. Intensifying Innovation. Forging Connection.” and welcomed more than 300 participants from government, industry, and academia.

U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines H.E. Philip S. Goldberg opened the conference as part of the initiatives of U.S.-Philippines Partnership for Growth. He acknowledged the good performance of the Philippines in meeting the objectives of partnership.

Synergy 2016 also featured an exhibit by ITSOs of select Philippine universities to showcase their innovation activities and efforts. A pitching competition was also held for one STRIDE prototype research grant of up to PhP1 million.

Day 1 panel discussions highlighted the Philippine innovation ecosystem, intellectual property environment projects and technology transfer initiatives both in the Philippines and abroad, and a presentation of the bioalgae innovation hub by USAID STRIDE grantee Dr. Aristotle Ubando of De La Salle University Manila.

Sixteen universities exhibited products and projects handled by their respective innovation and technology support offices (ITSOs) that also showcased IPOPHL’s partnership with them.

On Day 2, six universities vied for one STRIDE Prototype Research and Innovation Grant (SPRIG) of up to PhP1 million through a pitching competition that was judged by experts in science and technology innovation.

The last day was also dedicated to discussing strategies to strengthen existing ITSOs and creating more in Philippine universities.
